Where Vision Meets Structure
Cambium Design exists to bring clarity and cohesion to the space where architectural vision and structural reality intersect. Acting as a trusted representative of the Owner or Architect, we guide early decision-making, shape technical direction, and ensure that every phase of engineering and construction faithfully delivers on the original vision.
Owner-Advocacy Design Partner
Owners do not primarily buy drawings or construction services; they buy confidence, risk reduction, and predictability.
Traditional delivery models fragment accountability across designers, contractors, and specialty engineers. An owner-advocacy design firm fills this gap by maintaining continuity of technical decision-making from early feasibility through fabrication-level design. Furthermore, Cambium can provide the onsite oversite to ensure Owner’s/Architect’s vision is followed consistently.
Key owner benefits include fewer late-stage changes, clearer scope definition, better alignment between design intent and delegated packages, and a single technical party accountable for system-level coherence.
Opening Doors to Possibilities
Cambium’s role is to represent the Owner’s (or Architect’s) interests, such as vision, by shaping early decisions, governing technical development, and overseeing engineering and construction’s execution of the Owner’s/Architect’s vision
Structural engineering and the grey space between Architectural design and structural engineering (when the two are inextricable) is where Cambium Design operates and creates.

Delegated Design Oversight (DDO) as the Core Delivery Model
Delegated Design Oversight is the centerpiece of the proposed model. Under DDO, Cambium retains design authority (often as Engineer of Record or lead specialty engineer) while defining performance criteria and interface boundaries for other delegated designers such as steel, timber, precast, curtain wall, or modular system engineers.
The firm does not replace delegated engineers but governs their work on behalf of the owner. Responsibilities include qualification review, alignment of design assumptions, oversight of calculations and shop drawings, and resolution of system conflicts before fabrication or construction.
Collaborative Excellence
Cambium Design is based in Maryland and provides Structural Engineering and Design services for project Owners, Architects, and other Engineers. Our specialty are projects with exposed structural elements that are part of the visions and experience Architects and Owners want when using their buildings. We specialize in Mass Timber, Modern Heavy Timber, Traditional Heavy Timber, Masonry, Post and Beam, Hybrid-material structural systems (like structural steel combined with other materials), Masonry, and Concrete. Our project portfolio includes restoration, adaptive reuse, and new structures.
Want to discuss a project?
Cambium Design is a Maryland-based structural engineering firm partnering with owners and architects to bring bold design visions to life. We specialize in structures that are meant to be seen—where exposed elements shape both the aesthetic and experience of a space.
From mass timber and heavy timber to masonry, concrete, and hybrid systems, we deliver thoughtful, efficient solutions across restoration, adaptive reuse, and new construction projects.
